TRANSGENDER GIRLS TOLD TO LEAVE GUIDES BY SEPTEMBER AS MEMBERSHIP LIMITS TO THOSE ASSIGNED FEMALE AT BIRTH

Trans girls and young women will no longer be able to join Girlguiding, after the organisation confirmed a policy shift following recent legal developments. The decision, made in December, means trans girls will not be offered membership across youth sections including Rainbows, Brownies and Guides.

In a statement, Girlguiding said the move was necessary to remain compliant with the law: “We must operate lawfully and follow our governing charity documents.”

The changes will directly affect current trans girl members, who will be allowed to remain in the organisation until September 6, 2026, before leaving. The extended timeline is intended to give members the opportunity to participate in upcoming activities, access support, and transition out of the organisation at their own pace.

Trans volunteers in women-only roles will also be required to move into alternative positions by the same deadline. Meanwhile, trans boys, trans men, and non-binary individuals assigned female at birth are not impacted and can continue to join and remain within Girlguiding.

The shift follows an April 2025 UK Supreme Court ruling, which clarified that the terms “woman” and “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 refer specifically to biological sex. The ruling has since influenced how organisations interpret single-sex spaces and membership policies, prompting changes across multiple sectors.

Girlguiding, one of the UK’s largest youth organisations, has long positioned itself around empowerment, inclusion and development for girls and young women. Founded over a century ago, it provides community-based activities and support networks aimed at building confidence and life skills.

However, the decision has been met with backlash from within and outside the organisation. Campaign group Trans+ Solidarity Alliance described the move as “heartbreaking” for young people, adding that inclusive organisations are being “bullied into excluding people against their will.”

Some volunteers have also pushed back, claiming they were not considered on the decision and that it’s a contradiction to the organisation’s core values. In December, hundreds reportedly threatened to step down if the ban was not reconsidered.

A petition opposing the policy has since gathered over 400 signatures. Its organiser, Amanda Jane Heather, said

“We cannot, in good conscience, uphold a policy that contradicts established safeguarding research, the lived experience of our members, and the inclusive ethos we were trained to deliver. Volunteers are taking this step not out of frustration alone, but out of deep concern.”

With internal resistance growing and external scrutiny intensifying, many are now watching closely to see how Girlguiding navigates the fallout, and what this moment signals for the future of inclusion within UK youth organisations.
