THE SLUMFLOWER GETS INTO HEATED DEBATE OVER FEMINISM IN NIGERIA

THE SLUMFLOWER GETS INTO HEATED DEBATE OVER FEMINISM IN NIGERIA

Author and feminist advocate Chidera Eggerue, widely known online as Slumflower, found herself at the centre of a fiery podcast debate after clashing with a male co-host over feminism, marriage, gender roles and power dynamics in relationships.

During the discussion, Chidera spoke candidly about her views on marriage, describing it as a system that has historically benefited men more than women.

“The reason I say that is because marriage allows the poorest of men to still have a maid,” she argued, refusing to soften her stance even as the room reacted in shock.

The statement immediately sparked pushback from the male hosts, setting the tone for an intense back-and-forth conversation that quickly gained traction online.

Throughout the debate, Chidera made it clear that she sees herself as a voice for women who are unapologetic about asking for more in relationships and refusing to minimise themselves to make men feel comfortable. She explained that many women are conditioned to “pussyfoot around men” rather than confidently express their standards, expectations and desires.

The conversation became even more heated when the topic shifted to loyalty and financial dynamics in relationships. Chidera challenged the societal expectation that women should remain with wealthy partners after their financial status changes, bluntly stating:

“Guess what? He loses his money, he loses me.”

One of the podcasters immediately branded her “a demon,” prompting laughter, tension and further debate around transactional relationships and modern dating expectations.

Another standout moment came when the panel argued over whether men or women endure the most physically demanding roles in society. Chidera firmly responded:

“The hardest job in the world is giving birth and that’s done by women.”

When asked whether feminism meant wanting to be above men, she confidently replied: “I believe I am above,” doubling down on her controversial perspective.

She also delivered one of the podcast’s most talked-about lines: “You can’t afford the experience of being with me.” While the discussion had several tense moments, many viewers praised Chidera for remaining composed, articulate and unwavering in her beliefs despite constant interruptions and criticism.

Online reactions to the clip have been divided. Some viewers accused her of promoting extreme views on relationships and gender politics, while others defended her honesty, arguing that she simply vocalises conversations many women privately have but are afraid to say publicly.

Chidera Eggerue has built a career around challenging societal expectations placed on women, particularly Black women. Rising to prominence through her Slumflower platform, she is best known for championing body confidence, self-worth and female empowerment. Her bestselling books, including What A Time To Be Alone and How To Get Over A Boy, frequently explore themes surrounding dating, independence, emotional labour and the pressures women face in relationships,  many of the same themes that resurfaced during this now-viral debate.
