MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER AFTER SCIENTIST FOUND INJURED IN STREETS OF DUNDEE

A 20-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Dr. Fortune Gomo, a 39-year-old scientist who was found fatally injured on South Road in Dundee’s Lochee area on Saturday afternoon. Despite paramedics' efforts, she died at the scene. The suspect, Kyler Rattray from Dundee, appeared privately in Dundee Sheriff Court, where he made no plea and was remanded in custody. Sources say Dr Gomo was murdered in front of her young daughter, however, this has not yet been confirmed by authorities.

Originally from Mutare in eastern Zimbabwe, Dr. Gomo earned a PhD from the University of Dundee and recently began working at Scottish Water as a senior resource planner. Her family in Zimbabwe expressed their shock, with her brother, Regis Nyatsanza, sharing that she was due to celebrate her 40th birthday soon and had recently talked about marking the occasion quietly, feeling content with her achievements.

A close friend from Zimbabwe, Angela Machonesa, described her as both intellectually gifted and emotionally wise, someone who brought clarity and comfort to others. Tributes have poured in from the Dundee community, with flowers laid at the scene and collections started to support her family. Videos circulated online show members of the local Black community gathering at the site, seeking answers from police. Police Scotland acknowledged the deep impact of Dr. Gomo’s death and said senior officers are engaging with the community to offer reassurance.

Authorities confirmed the suspect was arrested soon after the incident and emphasised there is no ongoing threat to the public. They also cautioned against spreading speculation on social media that could add to the family’s distress. Dr. Gomo had studied in the Netherlands before settling in the UK, where she built a decade-long career in environmental and water research. Colleagues at Scottish Water paid tribute to her, calling her an exceptional scientist and a highly respected team member. Her family is currently receiving support from specialist officers, while the police investigation continues.

Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp said: "Our enquiries are continuing and I remain satisfied that the incident poses no wider risk to the public. "At this early stage of the investigation we are following a number of lines of inquiry. I am also acutely aware of content circulating on social media and urge the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident. The public will notice a visibly increased police presence in the area and I would encourage anyone who has any concerns to speak with our officers."
