Notting Hill Carnival is back for its 60th anniversary, celebrating Caribbean culture, music, food and community. TSB explores its Caribbean origins, music, and how to celebrate it this weekend! Notting Hill Carnival was launched in 1966 by the Caribbean community in West London. At the time migrants from the Caribbean, known as the Windrush generation, faced a lot of discrimination and racial prejudice. Notting Hill carnival grew as a way for to celebrate Caribbean culture, and bring the diverse communities of the area together despite the hostility they experienced.
Starting with just a Steelpan drum parade in the 60s, the festival completely changed in the 70s with the introduction of mas, sound systems and genres such as Reggae, Calypso, and Soca. It has since grown into Europe’s largest street party and one of the world’s biggest celebrations of Caribbean culture, featuring music, dance, costumes, food and sound-system culture. This year, the London festival is still going strong and has been given a £4.66 million grant by City Hall to address potential overcrowding.
