A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a vehicle collided with several pedestrians in west London before leaving the scene, according to police. The incident occurred on Ealing Broadway in West London at approximately 2.30pm on Saturday, prompting a major emergency response and road closures across the area.
Five pedestrians were injured when the vehicle struck people along the busy shopping district. Three casualties were taken to hospital for treatment, while two others were treated by paramedics at the scene. Police have confirmed that none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.
Officers later stopped the vehicle in nearby Grange Park and arrested the driver, a 34-year-old British man originally from Somalia, on suspicion of dangerous driving and attempted murder.
The Metropolitan Police said counter-terrorism officers were consulted during the initial stages of the investigation due to the nature of the incident. However, detectives have stated that the case is not currently being treated as terrorism-related.
In a statement, the force said: "Police were called to Ealing Broadway at 14:29hrs following reports of a vehicle colliding with multiple pedestrians.
"A total of five people sustained injuries. Two were treated at the scene and three were transported to hospital. At this stage, all injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening and not life-changing.
"The vehicle failed to stop immediately after the incident but was located and stopped in nearby Grange Park shortly afterwards. The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and attempted murder."
Investigators added that while all potential motives remain under consideration, there is currently no indication that the incident was linked to terrorism.
Video footage shared on social media appeared to show members of the public surrounding a white car moments before it accelerated away. The clips seem to show individuals attempting to open the driver's door and striking the vehicle as it moved through the area. Authorities have not yet verified the footage.
Road closures remain in place around Ealing Broadway while forensic examinations and inquiries continue. Police have warned that restrictions could remain for an extended period as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Witnesses and anyone with relevant information, photographs or video footage have been urged to contact police by calling 101 and quoting reference number 4607/27JUN.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents and former public officials familiar with the area.
Former Ealing Broadway councillor and ex-MP for Rother Valley, Alexander Stafford, described the events as "absolutely horrific" in a post on social media.
Reflecting on his connection to the area, he said he had previously represented Ealing Broadway as a councillor and had worked in the Marks & Spencer store located nearby. He added that his thoughts were with those injured and wished them a swift recovery.
Police investigations remain ongoing.
