Social media star Layo's Choice has spoken out and defended her stance after a clip of her speaking about preferring wigs to her natural hair resurfaced and went viral on TikTok.
"I made that video two years ago...me and Paul (Bridges) were bantering back and forth about him wearing suits and me wearing wigs. I said my hair is tough and also I don't like the way it looks out it doesn't suit me. Looking back it might not have been the best comment, best word to use. But that was how I felt at the time. "
Layo went on to admit that she used to love wearing her natural hair but fell victim to peer pressure and teasing when she got to primary school. "I used to wear my natural hair when I was younger or braids. I tried to slick it back, I spent so much time putting gel in my hair, by the time I got to school...It looked like I didn't try. I had braids, one would fall out in the playground and someone would pick it up and you would be chasing them around the playground." Layo went on to admit that these experiences shaped her relationship with her natural hair as well as the pain of getting cornrows.
Since Layo's comments have gone viral, the natural hair vs hair extension communities have gone to war. Many commenters and content creators defended the right to wear extensions and wigs, while others have asked for more support and understanding of natural hair. One Resident wrote on our Instagram page: "I really feel for her. What she’s describing sounds like a mix of both colourism and texturism, and that can shape how you see yourself for years. Afro hair isn’t 'tough' it’s actually soft and delicate when it’s understood and cared for properly. Everyone’s hair and scalp are different, and I just hope she gets the space to unlearn those experiences and learn her hair in a way that feels nurturing, not damaging."
A second added: "Generational trauma attached to hair is very real in our community and those childhood experiences really impact you for life. But if you get to adulthood believing your hair doesn’t suit you and never wearing it out, you have work to do."
While a third added that people should be free to wear their hair how they want, "One thing I’ve learned it’s that people will always have something to say anyway, even if you decide to go bald. there’s bigger things black people should talk about… lol."
However, one thing's for sure, the topic has flooded the for you page on TikTok with hundreds of videos being made about the subject every hour.
