British man David Osadebay, better known in the music world as rapper C Biz, has been found not guilty of possessing heroin with intent to supply after a lengthy trial in Bermuda.
Jurors reached their verdict just before 5.30pm yesterday, following several hours of deliberation. Osadebay, 38, had denied allegations that he was knowingly in possession of more than 160 grams of heroin found in a safe in his hotel room at the Royal Palms Hotel.
The case centred around events from August 4, 2023. Police had arrested Osadebay on suspicion of entering Bermuda using fraudulent documents after discovering he flew to the island a month earlier under the name Joshua Webb. During the investigation, officers searched his hotel room and discovered plastic-wrapped capsules inside the safe. Tests later confirmed they contained heroin with a purity between nine and eleven percent.
DNA analysis revealed two male profiles on the wrapping. Osadebay admitted one of the profiles was his but insisted he had no idea the drugs were in the safe. He explained that he had travelled to Bermuda to enjoy a holiday and explore the island’s music scene and that he often used different names when travelling to avoid media attention.
Osadebay told the court that he was shown around by a man named Jay, who later came to his hotel room on the day of the arrest with another unidentified man. He said the pair asked to use his bathroom and requested to leave something in the room. He claimed they were given the code to the safe but he never saw what they placed inside.
Moments after the men left, Osadebay was arrested while being driven along Parson’s Road.
His defence lawyer, Marc Daniels, argued that the DNA on the drug capsules could have been transferred after police placed them on the hotel bed to photograph them. He said the case was built on speculation and insisted there was not enough evidence to convict his client.
The jury ultimately agreed, returning a ten to two not guilty verdict and clearing Osadebay of all charges.
