The Tobacco and Vapes Bill has officially cleared Parliament, meaning the UK is about to introduce one of the strictest anti smoking laws in the world.
Under the new rules, anyone born after 1 January 2009 will never be able to legally buy cigarettes in their lifetime. So if you are 17 or younger right now… that is you.
The aim is simple, create a smoke free generation and reduce the long term health impacts linked to smoking, which remains one of the biggest causes of preventable illness and death in the UK.
The law will also give ministers new powers to regulate vaping and nicotine products, including things like flavours, packaging and how they are marketed, especially towards younger people.
There are also new restrictions on where people can vape.
Vaping will be banned in cars carrying children, as well as in playgrounds, outside schools and around hospitals. However, it will still be allowed in some outdoor hospital areas to support people trying to quit smoking.
Places like pub gardens, beaches and private outdoor spaces are not included in the ban, and people can still smoke or vape in their own homes.
Wes Streeting, the Secretary of State for Health, called it a “historic moment” and said the changes will help save lives, reduce pressure on the NHS and build a healthier country.
The bill now just needs royal approval before becoming law, but the direction is clear… smoking is being phased out for the next generation.
Residents, what do you think… smart move or doing too much? 👀🚭
