The footballer Jesús de Miguel, 30, passed away on Tuesday, November 3 2026, after being taken to hospital following on-pitch collision which occurred during Monday night's Spanish second-division fixture.
The match was abandoned in stoppage time after De Miguel collided with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono, who had rushed out of his penalty area to clear a long ball but struck the striker in the chest with his knee. De Miguel collapsed to the ground and received medical attention on the pitch for several minutes before being taken away by ambulance.
Tenerife initially confirmed that the striker was in a stable condition despite the severity of his injuries. However, his condition later deteriorated, with the club confirming that he had suffered a cardiac arrest before announcing his death the following morning.

Spanish police have since opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding De Miguel's death, including possible involuntary manslaughter.
However, authorities have stressed that the investigation is a routine procedure under Spanish law, which requires judicial inquiries into deaths considered non-natural, including accidents. Prosecutors have indicated that criminal proceedings are unlikely because the collision occurred during a football match. Owono, who represents Equatorial Guinea internationally, has also faced significant online abuse following the incident and subsequently deactivated his Instagram account.

Tributes have flooded in from across the footballing world, with clubs including Barcelona and Real Madrid expressing their condolences to De Miguel's family, teammates and loved ones. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin also paid tribute, announcing that a minute's silence would be observed before European fixtures throughout the week.
Meanwhile, the Spanish Football Federation postponed several scheduled cup fixtures as a mark of respect following the tragedy.

De Miguel was born in Madrid in 1996 and joined Tenerife from Castellón ahead of the 2025/26 season. He scored 11 goals during the previous campaign and played an important role in the club's promotion to Spain's second division.
His death has sent shockwaves through Spanish football, with supporters and fellow professionals remembering the striker following his tragic passing.
