SOUTHWARK'S HIV RATE IS MORE THAN FIVE TIMES THE NATIONAL AVERAGE

Southwark has one of the highest rates of HIV and sexually transmitted infections in the country, with the borough's HIV rate now more than five times higher than the national average.

Southwark Council has urged residents to get tested regularly as part of National Sexual Health Week, highlighting the high levels of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections recorded across the borough.

Almost 7,000 new STI diagnoses were recorded in Southwark during 2025, although the figure does not include chlamydia diagnoses among people under the age of 25, which are recorded separately.

The council is using the latest figures to encourage residents to take their sexual health seriously and make regular testing part of their routine.

HIV can be diagnosed through a simple test, with early diagnosis allowing people living with the virus to access treatment and support.

The figures place Southwark among the areas of the country with the highest rates of HIV and STIs, highlighting the importance of accessible sexual health services and regular testing.

The council's message comes during National Sexual Health Week, an annual campaign designed to raise awareness around sexual health, testing and prevention.
