Former BBC Radio 2 presenter Scott Mills, 53, was removed from the air last Tuesday following claims linked to his personal conduct. Mills reportedly signed off from his last show with the words “See you tomorrow”, unaware of the impending termination, which sources say relates to an investigation into alleged offences dating back to his time at BBC Radio 1.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said;

“In December 2016, the Met began an investigation following a referral from another police force. The investigation related to allegations of serious sexual offences against a teenage boy. These were reported to have taken place between 1997 and 2000."

They continued;

"As part of these enquiries a man who was in his 40s at the time of the interview was questioned by police under caution in July 2018. A full file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, who determined the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges. Following this, the investigation was closed in May 2019.”

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the boy involved was under 16, intensifying scrutiny on the BBC’s decision to terminate Mills’ contract. Reports suggest the sacking is related to the same individual.

A BBC spokesperson said,

“While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.”

The decision reportedly left colleagues stunned, with a BBC reporter saying,

“This is mega news. We heard gasps in the newsroom when people realised that he had been sacked. We don’t know why he’s been sacked but we do know that it will surely be unwelcome news. The fact that the bosses had to do this means there must be something potentially very significant here to let one of their big names go. As I said, this is a huge name in the BBC.”

Jeremy Vine commented on the situation, saying the BBC’s decision “feels unfair”, questioning why decisive action was taken despite no criminal charges being brought, a concern echoed by several industry insiders regarding fairness and due process.

Mills’ career at the BBC began in 1998 on Radio 1, hosting the early breakfast show, and later moving to an early evening weekday slot in 2005. The programme evolved into The Scott Mills Show, airing from 1pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday. He joined Radio 2 in July 2022, with his afternoon show launching on 31 October before taking over the Breakfast Show from Zoe Ball last year.

Following his removal from the BBC, Mills’ future projects have been put under review, and discussions are ongoing regarding his legacy and professional opportunities in light of the allegations, despite the absence of criminal convictions.
