A suspected HMRC scam call took an unexpected turn when the person on the receiving end turned out to be a lawyer who was more than prepared to challenge the caller’s story. Lawyer Kaydene Reanne shared the recording online, capturing the moment a woman claiming to be from HMRC attempted to convince her that she was facing a serious tax-related criminal case. What followed was a hilarious exchange that has left social media users in stitches.

The first red flag? The caller was allegedly representing HMRC but was ringing from a mobile phone number rather than an official government contact number.

Rather than immediately ending the call, Kaydene decided to play along and see where the conversation would lead.

Scammer: “I'm ringing from HMRC. How can I help you today?”

Kaydene: “You guys called me. How can I help you?”

Scammer: “You have reached HMRC? Can I take your name, ma'am?”

Kaydene: “You called me. How can I help you?”

Scammer: “I need to verify your information. The call is regarding a tax amount outstanding. I need to make sure you are the right person, so I can give you more information.”

Kaydene: “So who do you think I am?”

Scammer: “I need you to verify, it's protocol, ma'am.”

Kaydene: “My name is Chantelle Brown.”

Scammer: “Thank you. Please bear with me.”

Brief pause.

Scammer: “Ms Brown, as you are connected to HMRC, I can see your file. You are getting a call right now because you have a criminal case regarding a tax filing. Do you have any criminal lawyer who can represent you in the courthouse?”

Kaydene: “Oh my gosh, yeah I do. I'm a lawyer myself. I can represent myself.”

Scammer: “Oh shut up, okay. I know that your name is not Chantelle Brown. Please hang up the call.”

And just like that, the scam unravelled.

The caller, who moments earlier had been insisting on strict verification protocols and warning of a supposed criminal case, appeared to lose patience the moment Kaydene revealed she was a lawyer. Instead of continuing the act, the scammer abruptly dropped the professional tone and ended the conversation.
