PSG BEAT ARSENAL ON PENALTIES TO WIN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2026

PSG BEAT ARSENAL ON PENALTIES TO WIN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2026

Paris Saint Germain have been crowned Champions League winners for a second consecutive season after defeating Arsenal on penalties in a dramatic final at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest.

The French champions retained their European crown after a fiercely contested match finished 1-1 following 120 minutes of football, with PSG eventually holding their nerve from the spot to secure a 4-3 shootout victory and continue their dominance under manager Luis Enrique.

Arsenal made the perfect start to the final and stunned PSG early on when Kai Havertz found the back of the net inside the opening minutes. The German forward capitalised on a fortunate deflection before driving forward and firing past the goalkeeper to give Mikel Arteta’s side an early advantage.

For much of the first half Arsenal defended superbly, frustrating a PSG side known for their attacking quality and ability to dominate possession. However, the momentum shifted after the break when PSG began to increase the pressure.

The equaliser arrived in the 65th minute when Ousmane Dembélé converted from the penalty spot after a challenge on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the area. The goal brought PSG level and completely changed the atmosphere inside the stadium as both teams pushed for a winner.

Despite chances for both sides, neither team could find the decisive goal during normal time or extra time. Arsenal had penalty appeals waved away during the additional period, while PSG struck the post and continued to test David Raya. The deadlock remained unbroken, sending the final to penalties.

The shootout proved agonising for Arsenal supporters. Although Raya managed to save one PSG penalty, misses from Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhães ultimately handed victory to the French side. Gabriel’s effort sailed over the bar, allowing PSG to seal a 4-3 win and lift the trophy once again.

Following the defeat, Arsenal fans flooded social media with messages of support for the squad despite the heartbreak of coming so close.

One person wrote,

“I don’t care what you lot say, I’m so PROUD of the boys, we go again next year! And to the rest of you making jokes, let’s all relax because your team, didn’t even make it to the final. Icky behaviour. Arsenal vs the World, always.”

Another commented,

“I don’t care what anyone says, Arsenal played well, Paris felt the pressure and it was a hard game for Paris. Arsenal were unlucky on penalties, that’s it. Arsenal all day, every day, period!”

Although disappointment remains, many Arsenal supporters are still riding high after what has already been a historic campaign. Earlier this season, the North London club secured their first Premier League title in 22 years, ending a wait stretching back to the famous Invincibles era of 2004. That achievement alone transformed the mood around the club and reinforced the belief that Arteta’s long term project is finally delivering major success.

The Champions League final defeat has understandably left fans emotional, but many view it as another sign of Arsenal’s progress rather than a setback. The club reached European football’s biggest stage, pushed the reigning champions to penalties and proved they can compete with the strongest sides on the continent.

Looking ahead, optimism remains high. Arsenal are expected to strengthen again during the summer transfer window, with several additions already linked to the club. Players such as Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, William Saliba and Kai Havertz remain central to the squad, while Arteta has repeatedly spoken about building a team capable of challenging for trophies year after year.

PSG may have walked away with the Champions League trophy, but Arsenal’s season will still be remembered as one of the most significant in the club’s modern history. Ending a 22 year wait for the Premier League title while also reaching a Champions League final has given supporters genuine belief that even bigger moments could still be around the corner. For now, the pain of Budapest will linger, but so will the feeling that this Arsenal side is only just getting started.
