A female prison officer has appeared in court accused of working alongside two inmates to supply drugs and smuggle prohibited items into HMP Brixton. Shannon Day, twenty four, from Sydenham in southeast London, appeared at Croydon Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged alongside Bertil Baluba, thirty four, and Mark McBain, sixty two.

The court heard that all three defendants face a series of serious allegations including drug smuggling, conspiracy, misconduct in public office, fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors allege that between 1 September and 31 October 2022, the trio conspired to supply a quantity of cannabis.
They are also accused of conspiring to supply so called Spice Paper, a form of synthetic drug where spice, a Class B substance, is sprayed onto paper so it can be smoked or ingested by prisoners. In addition, the defendants are charged with conspiring during the same period to bring prohibited items into HMP Brixton, including three mobile phones and charging cables.
Shannon Day faces further charges on her own. She is accused of one count of misconduct in public office, as well as fraud by false representation between 22 January 2022 and 9 February 2023. The fraud charge relates to allegations that she failed to disclose previous visits to another prisoner at HMP Lewis and HMP Maidstone, which prosecutors say was done with the intent of securing employment at HMP Brixton.
