DRUG DEALER WHO CRASHED CAR THEN KILLED FEMALE PEDESTRIAN SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS IN PRISON

DRUG DEALER WHO CRASHED CAR THEN KILLED FEMALE PEDESTRIAN SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS IN PRISON

A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to more than two decades in prison after carrying out a fatal and unprovoked attack on a woman in Leicester. Chukwuemeka Ahanonu drove the wrong way along a busy city road before crashing and overturning his BMW near Leicester Royal Infirmary on 24 June 2025. Shortly after fleeing the wreckage, he launched a violent assault on 56-year-old Nila Patel, who had just stepped off a bus and was speaking on the phone to a friend as she walked home.

In what prosecutors described as a “vicious” and entirely random attack, Ahanonu pulled Ms Patel from behind and struck her with such force that she fell to the pavement. He then repeatedly kicked and stamped on her, including her face, while she lay defenceless on the ground. Ms Patel suffered catastrophic injuries and died in hospital two days later from brain damage.

Ahanonu, who lived on Dover Street in Leicester, denied murder but admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. However, after a month-long trial at Leicester Crown Court, a jury found him guilty of murder. On Monday, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years and six months. The court heard that Ahanonu and Ms Patel were complete strangers.

Prosecutors revealed that at the time of the attack, Ahanonu had significant levels of cannabis in his system. Blood tests showed THC levels of 7.6 micrograms—almost four times the legal driving limit of 2 micrograms. No alcohol was detected. Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, told jurors that voluntary intoxication could not excuse his actions. She stated that choosing to consume a substance that alters behaviour does not negate intent in cases of murder.

The court was also told that Ahanonu had a history of criminal behaviour. He had been released on licence in July 2024 after serving part of a two-year sentence for offences including possession of a machete and over £1,000 in cash. Despite claiming universal credit, he was said to be running a “significant” drugs operation, allegedly earning up to £10,000 per month.

At the start of the trial, Ahanonu pleaded guilty to several additional offences, including dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply Class B drugs, and assaulting an emergency worker after biting a police officer. He was acquitted of a separate allegation of common assault involving a woman known to him in London earlier that same day. Detective Inspector Emma Matts described the killing as a “horrific and senseless act of violence” against an innocent woman. She said Ms Patel had simply been making her way home when she was targeted in a random attack by a stranger.

In a deeply emotional statement, Ms Patel’s children, Jaidan and Danika, paid tribute to their mother, describing her as “the heart of our family” and their “best friend and biggest supporter.” They spoke of her strength as a single mother who overcame many hardships while remaining kind, caring, and selfless. They recalled how she found joy in caring for others—whether through cooking, thoughtful gestures, or simply offering love and support.

They also reflected on the tragic irony that, even moments before the attack, their mother had shown concern for Ahanonu following his car crash—an act they said perfectly captured her compassionate nature. Her children said the loss has left a permanent void in their lives, adding that she had so much more to look forward to, including growing older, enjoying retirement, and becoming a grandmother. They ended their tribute with a powerful reminder: “Mum’s life mattered.”
