American R&B artist Chris Brown is set to reapply for bail this week following his remand in UK custody over allegations of a violent assault at a London nightclub in 2023. The singer, facing charges of grievous bodily harm with intent, was previously denied bail by Manchester Magistrates' Court. His next court appearance is scheduled for 13 June at Southwark Crown Court, a date that clashes with his scheduled world tour, raising doubts about whether his upcoming performances will go ahead.
The charges stem from an incident on 19 February 2023 at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, where Brown allegedly attacked music producer Abraham Diaw with a bottle of Don Julio 1942 tequila, followed by punching and kicking him. Diaw claims the assault left him unconscious with head lacerations and torn ligaments in his leg, leading to a £12 million ($16 million) civil lawsuit against Brown.
Brown was arrested on 15 May 2025 at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester upon his return to the UK. The court deemed the charges too serious for a magistrates' court, leading to his remand in custody until the Crown Court hearing.
The singer's legal team plans to submit a renewed bail application at Southwark Crown Court ahead of the June hearing. The outcome will determine whether Brown can proceed with his "Breezy Bowl XX" world tour, set to commence on 8 June in Amsterdam.
This case adds to Brown's history of legal issues, including a 2009 felony assault conviction involving singer Rihanna.
The Crown Prosecution Service has the importance of preserving the integrity of the legal process, urging the public to refrain from commentary that could prejudice the proceedings
Chris Brown was previously reported to have been transferred to HMP Forest Bank or Strangeways, a Category B prison in Manchester, where he is currently being held in custody
