British actor David Jonsson has been unveiled as the new Black Panther, becoming the latest star to take on one of Marvel's most iconic superhero roles.

The announcement was made during Marvel Studios' Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where director Ryan Coogler confirmed that Jonsson will lead the upcoming third instalment of the Black Panther franchise.

Speaking on stage, Coogler explained that the new film will focus on the coming-of-age story of T'Challa's son, who was first introduced at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

"The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played, our T'Challa," Coogler said.

"And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up and comes of age."

Jonsson received a standing ovation as he walked on stage before thanking Coogler, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the wider cast and crew.

"Thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin, thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour and the privilege and the blessing to join," he said.

"I actually don't want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honour is entirely mine."

Born in Custom House, east London, Jonsson grew up as the youngest of four siblings and has described his heritage as Creole, with family roots spanning Nigeria, Sierra Leone, the Caribbean and Sweden.

After joining the National Youth Theatre, he earned a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 2016 before beginning his career on the West End stage. In 2021, he won a Black British Theatre Award for his performance in and breathe....

Jonsson's screen career has continued to go from strength to strength, earning widespread recognition for his role in the acclaimed BBC Two and HBO drama Industry. He has also appeared in Deep State and The Road Trip, while his film credits include Rye Lane, Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk.

The announcement marks a major milestone for the British star, who now follows in the footsteps of the late Chadwick Boseman, whose portrayal of King T'Challa helped make Black Panther one of Marvel's most celebrated and culturally significant films.
