Nigeria has officially been ranked as the country with the lowest life expectancy globally, and the stats are shocking!
According to new data from the United Nations, the average Nigerian is expected to live just 54.9 years. For men, it’s 54.3 years, while women live slightly longer at 54.9 years.
Health experts say the ranking reflects Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with high disease rates, poor access to quality healthcare, and rising maternal and infant mortality.
Many online called the report “heartbreaking but not surprising,” pointing to poor hospital conditions, economic hardship, and brain drain in the medical field as major factors.
While some Nigerians say the government needs to urgently invest in health infrastructure, others questioned how the country got here in the first place.
💬 Comments from the borough:
A few people found humour in the situation.
@dilackot: “Nigerians lower their age tho so how accurate is the data 😂”, a funny take that had over 23 replies.
Some agreed with the report.
@signorinafede: “Let’s face it! Statistics reveal the harsh reality. Nigerians work ridiculously hard, often sacrificing their well-being. Lost my dad to a stroke at 45 and my mom to stress. It’s time to prioritise life.”
@mainboogy: “The stress and suffering is too much in the land!! Nothing to defend here. The government has failed us.”
@princetopps: “This is facts. Just visit the hospitals to see how bad things really are.”
But others weren’t buying it.
@saint_ndoo: “As a Nigerian this is not accurate. All those old people wey full village wey no gree die una count them?”
@daraluxehair: “My grandma in the village will be turning 113 next year 😭”
@flawlessandall90: “My great-grandmother died at 110, she was Nigerian.”
In the end, the report has Nigerians debating what it really means to live long in a country where survival itself feels like a daily battle. Whether the numbers are off or not, one thing’s for sure, Nigerians are still finding humour, strength, and community through it all ❤🇳🇬
