After what already feels like a relentless start to summer, the UK is bracing for another spell of scorching temperatures, with forecasters predicting a third heatwave could arrive as early as next week.
According to the Met Office, high pressure is expected to build across southern parts of the UK over the weekend and into next week, increasing the likelihood of the year's third heatwave. Temperatures are forecast to climb into the low 30s across parts of England, although they are not expected to reach the record-breaking levels experienced at the end of June.
While many will be looking forward to another excuse to head to the beach or enjoy a post-work drink in the sunshine, the return of extreme heat is also bringing renewed concerns over public health, transport disruption and pressure on infrastructure.

The latest hot spell follows two previous heatwaves that saw packed parks, crowded beaches and commuters battling sweltering trains and Tube services. The recent heat also saw England record its hottest June on record, with the UK experiencing its second warmest June since records began. Health officials have continued to remind people to check in on vulnerable family members, neighbours and young children, as prolonged periods of high temperatures can pose serious health risks.
As temperatures rise once again, health experts are advising people to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even if they do not feel thirsty. Keeping blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day can help prevent homes from overheating, while wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limiting strenuous activity during the afternoon can also make a significant difference. Those heading outdoors are encouraged to wear sunscreen, seek shade where possible and never leave children or pets in parked cars.

Of course, social media has already started reacting in true British fashion. While some people are excited to make the most of the sunshine, others have joked that the country simply is not built for this kind of weather. From memes about sleepless nights and battling through work with no air conditioning to complaints about melting on public transport, many say they are already counting down to autumn.
Others, however, are determined to make the most of what could be another short-lived burst of summer, pointing out that before long the country will be back to grey skies, rain and wondering where the sunshine disappeared to.
Whether you are planning a barbecue, heading to the park or simply trying to survive another night without air conditioning, one thing is certain, the fans will be working overtime once again.
