Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood has been charged with four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the charges relate to alleged offences involving seven women between 1983 and 2016. The youngest complainant was 17 at the time of the alleged assault.
Westwood, 68, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 11 November. According to police, the former broadcaster is accused of indecently assaulting a 17-year-old girl in Fulham in 1983, and sexually assaulting a woman in her 20s in Vauxhall in 1986. He also faces allegations of rape and sexual assault against a teenager, aged 17 to 18, in London between 1995 and 1996.
Further charges include the rape and sexual assault of a 17–18-year-old between 2000 and 2001, the rape of a woman in her 20s in 2010, and two additional sexual assaults—one against a woman in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 2010, and another in Finchley, London, in 2016.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police said:
"It takes courage to come forward and report allegations of this nature. The women who have done so have placed their trust in us, and we continue to provide them with all available support. Our investigation remains open, and we encourage anyone affected by this case, or with information, to speak with us."
Westwood began his broadcasting career in local radio before moving to Capital Radio in the late 1980s. He joined the BBC in 1994, where he worked across Radio 1 and 1Xtra for nearly two decades before leaving in 2013. He later joined Capital Xtra, hosting a Saturday night show under the moniker “The Big Dawg”, before stepping down in 2022
