British student Teraiya Stapleton who was only 21 when she was arrested on October 20th 2024, alongside her friend Genevieve Sanoussi at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.

The two women were detained after Jamaican authorities alleged that cocaine had been concealed inside footwear in their luggage as they prepared to fly back to the UK. Both women denied knowing that the drugs were present and maintained that they had not knowingly attempted to smuggle cocaine while questioning aspects of the prosecution and legal process.

Stapleton’s mother Sheryl Gentles shared the news via social media, saying:

“My baby’s home.”

The case subsequently went through the Jamaican courts, with Stapleton and Sanoussi spending a prolonged period in the country while the legal proceedings continued. In March 2026, both women were convicted in Jamaica were sentenced to nine months in prison and as well as a fine. By the time the sentence was handed down, she had already spent a significant amount of time in Jamaica following her arrest.

The case attracted considerable attention in the UK, particularly because of the length of the proceedings and the amount of time the two women spent away from their families. Throughout the case, Stapleton's family and supporters maintained that she was unaware of the cocaine allegedly concealed in the luggage.

Now back in the UK, attention is likely to turn to what comes next for Stapleton and whether there will be any further developments relating to her case. For those close to her, however, her return home is likely to be the most significant development yet — allowing the family to finally have her back in Britain after a prolonged period apart.
