Sabastian Sawe has created a defining moment in marathon history after winning the London Marathon and becoming the first man to officially finish the race in under two hours.

Sawe clocked an astonishing 1:59:30 on the 26.2-mile course to claim victory at the prestigious event, breaking the previous official world record by a significant margin and setting a new benchmark for elite marathon running. The performance on Sunday was a culmination of years of effort to break one of the most revered barriers in endurance sport, and Sawe’s achievement now stands as a milestone in athletics history.

Reflecting on his historic run, Sawe said,

“What comes today is not for me alone, but for all of us today in London.”

His remarkable performance extended a legacy of Kenyan excellence in long-distance running and showed the impact of meticulous training, race strategy and endurance.

Off the elite course, the event drew a record number of participants and supporters, with tens of thousands of amateur runners taking part and large crowds lining the route through the streets of the capital. The atmosphere was electric as Sawe’s historic finish was celebrated by the running community and spectators alike.

Sawe’s sub-two-hour marathon run is the first to be achieved under standard competitive conditions and is recognised by world athletics as the official marathon world record time. This contrasts with a previous sub-two-hour attempt by another legendary marathoner that took place under specially organised conditions that were not eligible for record status.

The London Marathon director described the day as one of the most memorable in the event’s history, highlighting Sawe’s feat as a testament to human endurance and the progression of the sport.
