Rapper Lavida Loca Opens Up The Conversation Of Skinny Body Shaming

Skinny shaming, just as fat-shaming is very common around the world. It is particularly worse for females in the hip-hop industry; who are often subjected to unrealistic body expectations.  In many cases, female musicians are expected to have the perfect hourglass figures, which is not how most people naturally look.

Yesterday, the 21-year-old rapper started up a conversation about skinny shaming on her Twitter account. she wrote on her timeline: "Ok I'm getting my bum done. People will listen to my music more when I got a fat ass"

"I can actually rap.. and I look good.. the only thing missing is the ass? Am I lying?", she added.

In another tweet, she posted various screenshots showing how some users had been body-shaming her in the comment section of her videos.

The rapper also invited her followers on the Clubhouse app to have a conversation on skinny shaming. She wrote; "If you've experienced skinny shaming, dm me. If you haven't, but still slim, dm me - we about to do sum"

These kinds of "popping" bodies have been normalised to the extent that many female rappers, who do not fit the stereotypical mold feel out of place.

In some instances, they have ended up subjecting themselves to plastic surgery to get the body types that "fits industry standards"

In the comments, many users seemed to sympathise with Lavida on her post.

"I get skinny shaming all the time!!!! " you need milk" "you need some meat", "mawga gyal", "likkle gyal", "tiny", "pretty but no meat"", one user commented talking about how they too had been skinny shamed.

It is high time

The conversation Lavida has brought up has been long overdue. Many female rappers are increasingly feeling the pressure to get under the scalpel to fix their bodies - yet there was nothing wrong with them in the first place.

There is a dire need for the music industry to be more accepting of all body types and shapes.  Just a few weeks ago Yasmin Pink revealed having complications with her breast implants.

This and more trouble is what rappers have to go through to fit into the unrealistic body expectations that have been created around female hip-hop artists..
