Over 50 MPs to be Investigated Due to Allegation of Sexual Misconduct

Over 50 MPs, including two shadow cabinet ministers, have been reported by the Independent Complaints and Grievance scheme (ICGS) for sexual misconduct.

This news comes just one week after Imran Ahmad Khan was convicted of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy in 2018. Khan has confirmed that he will be appealing this conviction and intends to resign.The FDA union have said that it is time to "look again" at the relationship between MPs and their staff.56 unnamed members of parliament have been reported to a parliamentary watchdog. According to reports, at least one of the complaints made are believed to relate to a criminal offence.The ICGS are believed to be handling 70 separate complaints dating back to 2018. The organisation was set up in the wake of the #MeToo movement and after MPs, such as Michael Fallon and Charlie Elphicke, faced allegations related to sexual misconduct.

Past Allegations and Convictions of MPs Sexual Misconduct

Michael Fallon resigned from his post in late October 2017 after a number of allegations regarding inappropriate touching and sexual language were made against him by female MP's and journalists.Charlie Elphicke received a two-year sentence in September 2020 after being found guilty on three counts of sexual assault. The assault victims were two members of his staff.David Warburton, another Conservative MP, was also suspended earlier this month after a series of allegations regarding sexual harassment and cocaine use. Warburton denies these allegations wholly.Jess Phillips, Labour MP and the shadow minister for domestic violence and safeguarding has urged the Speaker of the Commons, Lindsay Hoyle, to convene a panel of MPs and experts to assess the "power imbalance" in parliament.Speaking to the Sunday Times, a government spokesperson said: "We take all allegations of this nature incredibly seriously and would encourage anyone with any allegations to come forward o the relevant authorities."
