NIGEL FARAGE RESIGNS AS CLACTON MP AND TRIGGERS BY-ELECTION

NIGEL FARAGE RESIGNS AS CLACTON MP AND TRIGGERS BY-ELECTION

Nigel Farage has resigned as the MP for Clacton, triggering a by-election that he has confirmed he intends to contest in a bid to retain his seat.

The Reform UK leader announced the decision as he continues to face scrutiny over his financial affairs, including an investigation by Parliament's standards watchdog into whether he failed to declare a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne before the 2024 general election. A separate inquiry is also examining allegations relating to financial support provided by his long-time associate George Cottrell. Farage denies any wrongdoing and has maintained that he has complied with the law.

Explaining his decision, Farage said he wanted the people of Clacton to decide whether they still had confidence in him, describing the by-election as an opportunity for voters to judge his actions directly rather than allowing what he has characterised as an establishment-driven campaign against him.

Announcing his resignation, Farage said:

"I've decided today I will resign as a member of parliament for Clacton-on-Sea, thereby forcing a by-election, which should happen, I hope, in short order."

He added:

"I've decided that the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions."

Under parliamentary rules, investigations by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards are paused if an MP ceases to hold their seat. Should Farage be re-elected, the investigations are expected to resume. If he is not returned to Parliament, the commissioner will decide whether it is appropriate and proportionate to continue them.

The announcement has prompted a significant political reaction, with Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats indicating they do not intend to contest the by-election, describing the move as a political stunt rather than a conventional electoral contest.

Farage described the contest as "a people versus the establishment by-election", adding:

"It's a chance to stick two fingers up to the entire Establishment... I will fight to win."

Farage first became the MP for Clacton after winning the constituency at the 2024 general election. The seat has since become the focal point of Reform UK's parliamentary presence, with Farage continuing to lead the party nationally while positioning himself as one of the government's most outspoken critics.

The decision has also fuelled intense debate across social media, where many questioned both the timing of his resignation and what it could mean for the investigations. One user commented:

"They will still vote Reform because their hatred of people of colour outweighs their own set 8 logic."

Another wrote:

"He's trying to get ahead of the investigation that's currently looking into £5M 'gift' he got from a shady crypto billionaire that he didn't declare. He thinks resigning and winning this seat again (in a very conservative area) will absolve him of corruption. It will not!"

A third added:

"If the people of Clacton choose him, then they very much deserve him because no-one can say they did not know lol."

The by-election is expected to take place in the coming weeks, with Farage seeking a fresh mandate from voters while the investigations into his financial declarations continue in the background. Whatever the outcome, the contest is likely to attract national attention, both for its political significance and for the questions that remain surrounding the inquiries.
