Millionaire Leaves wife for Ukrainian Refugee

A millionaire and former boss of the payday loan firm, Wonga, has left his wife for a Ukrainian refugee that the couple housed to help the war against Ukraine.

Millionaire Haakon Overli, 52, started an affair with the woman after she arrived at the family's home is Surrey following the Russian invasion.

Overli had actually been a huge supporter of the idea bringing Ukrainian refugees to the UK as he repeatedly tweeted his support at the beginning of the conflict in March.

The millionaire had also lobbied that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Priti Patel speed up the process of bringing the woman refugees to Britain, says The Sun.

Now, the 52 year-old has left his wife and moved in with his mistress.

Norwegian-born Mr Overli has an economics degree from Durham University and made his money by founding online stockbroker Self Trade in 1997, selling it for more than £900 million in 2000.

The millionaire also worked for JP Morgan and ING Barings, as well as serving as a director at loan company Wonga for a year in 2008.

The company were known for "predatory lending" to people who would be unable to repay back the money.

Around 200,000 customers owed £400 million when Wonga went bust because of a flood in compensation claims.

Mr Overli's situation is similar to that of a security guard, Tony Garnett, who left the mother of two children for a 22-year-old Ukrainian refugee, Soffia Sofiia Karkadym.

Unemployed Mr Garnett, 29, had been with wife Lorna, 28, for 10 years.

After online abuse over the split, he said: "My relationship with Lorna had broken down for some years and we were living as brother and sister."

"Since Sofiia arrived, I have managed to smile a lot and be happy again. I'm going to make her my wife."

Garnett has now become her full-time carer since she went partially blind.
