British actor Micheal Ward is facing serious legal action after being charged with multiple sexual offences. The charges, brought forward by the Crown Prosecution Service, relate to an alleged incident involving one woman in early 2023. Ward, best known for his rising profile in British television and film, will answer the charges in court next month.
Det Supt Scott Ware, leading the Metropolitan Police’s investigation, stated:
“Our specialist officers continue to support the woman who has come forward, we know investigations of this nature can have significant impact on those who make reports.”
Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Catherine Baccas said:
“Having carefully reviewed a file of evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Micheal Ward, 27, with two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault against a woman in January 2023.”
She added:
“We remind all concerned that proceedings against the suspect are active and he has a right to a fair trial. It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
Ward, born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, and raised in East London, rose to prominence as Jamie in Top Boy, and earned a BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2020. He received further nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his performances in Small Axe: Lovers Rock and Empire of Light.
Before his breakout role in Top Boy, Ward began modelling and took on small roles in films such as Brotherhood (2016). He later trained at the Identity School of Acting in London, which has produced other high-profile Black British talents such as Letitia Wright and John Boyega. His performance in Empire of Light (2022) opposite Olivia Colman earned him critical acclaim internationally. He has also appeared in films such as Blue Story and The Old Guard, and is cast in the upcoming pandemic-era western Eddington, set for UK release next month.
The charges relate to alleged incidents involving a single complainant in January 2023, and Ward is scheduled to appear in court on 28 August 2025 at Thames Magistrates’ Court. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) determined there was a “realistic prospect of conviction” following a review of evidence provided by the Metropolitan Police. The legal process is ongoing, with emphasis from both the CPS and police on ensuring a fair and unprejudiced trial.
The actor retains the presumption of innocence until a court verdict is delivered. Media organisations and the public are advised against speculation or sharing information online that could risk prejudicing legal proceedings.
As of now, Micheal Ward’s legal representatives and publicist have not released any public statement in response to the charges.
