Lewis Hamilton has confirmed the passing of his beloved English bulldog, Roscoe, describing the loss as one of the most painful experiences of his life. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion had spent Roscoe’s final days by his side, after the dog was placed on life support due to pneumonia.
Sharing his emotions on social media, Hamilton said:
“After four days on life support, fighting with every bit of strength he had, I had to make the hardest decision of my life and say goodbye to Roscoe. He never stopped fighting, right until the very end. I feel so grateful and honoured to have shared my life with such a beautiful soul, an angel and true friend.”
Hamilton reflected on the deep bond he shared with Roscoe, describing the bulldog as a source of joy and comfort throughout his life. He wrote:
“Bringing Roscoe into my life was the best decision I ever made, and I will forever cherish the memories we created together".
He also spoke candidly about the challenge of having to make such a heart-wrenching decision, noting the earlier loss of his other dog, Coco, in 2020.
“Although I lost Coco, I have never been faced with putting a dog to sleep before, though I know my mum and many close friends have,” Hamilton added.
“It is one of the most painful experiences and I feel a deep connection to everyone who has gone through the loss of a beloved pet. Although it was so hard, having him was one of the most beautiful parts of life, to love so deeply and to be loved in return. Thank you all for the love and support you’ve shown Roscoe over the years. It has been so special to witness and feel.”
Roscoe had been a constant companion for Hamilton since 2013, the year he joined Mercedes, becoming a familiar presence in the Formula 1 paddock. The bulldog often appeared alongside Hamilton at races and events, capturing the admiration of fans worldwide. Hamilton frequently highlighted his love for his pets, showing how central they are to his life beyond racing.
Hamilton had even missed a Ferrari tyre test to remain with Roscoe during the dog’s illness, demonstrating the depth of his attachment. Despite the pressures of his first season with Ferrari and the challenge of competing for a podium, Hamilton prioritised Roscoe’s wellbeing in his final days.
Fans and fellow drivers have expressed their condolences, sharing memories of meeting Roscoe at circuits and commenting on Hamilton’s open display of love and grief. The F1 community has rallied around Hamilton, recognising the significance of the bond he shared with his loyal companion.
Hamilton’s heartfelt tribute resonates not only with Formula 1 fans but also with pet owners everywhere. His openness about grief has sparked conversations about the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones, human or animal.
