UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reaffirmed Britain's unwavering support for Ukraine after Russia warned of potential repercussions following reports that British-made drones were used in recent Ukrainian attacks inside Russian territory. Speaking on Tuesday, Burnham stressed that the United Kingdom would remain committed to Ukraine despite mounting pressure from Moscow.

"We are not fair-weather friends. We will stand by Ukraine when it needs support, and that commitment will not change," he said.

The comments came after the Russian Embassy in London accused Britain of escalating the conflict by increasing its involvement in Ukraine's military operations. In a strongly worded statement, Russian officials claimed that the deeper the UK's participation in the war, the greater the consequences it could face.

Ukraine has intensified its long-range strike campaign in recent months, targeting strategic sites across Russia, including oil refineries and logistics facilities. These attacks are part of Kyiv's broader effort to disrupt Russia's military and economic infrastructure far from the front lines.

Responding to Moscow's criticism, Burnham defended Britain's position, stating that the UK was helping Ukraine protect its sovereignty and defend itself against aggression. He noted that support for Kyiv has remained a consistent policy under successive British governments since the conflict began.

This is not the first time Russia has criticised Britain for supplying military technology and weapons to Ukraine. Moscow has previously condemned the UK's provision of advanced equipment, including drone systems and long-range missiles, arguing that such assistance fuels the conflict.

Although the Russian Embassy warned that Britain's actions would have consequences, it did not specify what measures Russia might take in response.

The latest wave of Ukrainian strikes has reportedly placed additional pressure on Russia's economy and fuel supply network. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the United Kingdom has been among Kyiv's most significant international allies, providing military aid, training programmes and political support.

The Ministry of Defence reiterated that Britain remains committed to supplying Ukraine with the equipment it needs to defend itself against what it described as Russia's illegal invasion.

According to reports, two British companies have manufactured drones that were later supplied to Ukraine. A military source indicated that UK-produced drones were involved in recent operations that allegedly caused tens of billions of pounds in economic losses to Russia.

Throughout the conflict, the Kremlin has repeatedly criticised both the UK and the United States for their role in supporting Ukraine financially, politically and militarily.

Britain's backing proved particularly important during the early stages of the war. Under former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the UK supplied anti-tank weapons that played a significant role in helping Ukrainian forces halt Russia's advance towards Kyiv.

Since then, British assistance has expanded to include more sophisticated military equipment as well as extensive training for Ukrainian troops. Burnham signalled the continuation of this support when he chose Kyiv as the destination for his first overseas visit as prime minister in July.

Anti-British rhetoric has also increased on Russian state television, where commentators and political figures have frequently called for tougher action against the UK.
