On the 11th April Imran Ahmad Khan was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy. It was reported that the attack happened in a residence in Staffordshire in 2008 where Mr Khan was said to have forced his victim to drink gin and watch pornography.Following the verdict, the Conservative MP would be removed from the party and stated that he would resign from his position. Khan took to Twitter to make a public statement. He would claim that he would be "resigning as MP for Wakefield and withdrawing from political life."

However, it has emerged that he has still not formally resigned from his Westminster seat nearly two-weeks after his promise was publicly made.Local Tory party members have urged Mr Khan to uphold his promise to stand down. The family of Imran Ahmad Khan have also been asked to intervene to ensure that he leaves his position as soon as possible.

MPs who wish to resign must write a letter to the Treasury to begin the process of standing down. After the Treasury accepts this notice a date for a by-election can be set. However, the Treasury has reportedly not received a letter from Imran Ahmad Khan and his office has not responded to inquiries about when he will submit his resignation.

Tony Homewood, a Tory councillor in Wakefield who acted as Khan's election agent in 2019 has appealed to Khan's brothers. Karim Khan is a prosecutor at the international criminal court (ICC) in The Hague, whom Homewood would specifically appeal to in a series of tweets."I realise that [Karim Khan] is involved in very important work at the ICC but I implore him to intervene in this matter,""I would remind everyone reading this tweet... that the Khan family are good Wakefield people and are not responsible for the appalling behaviour of one of their number, which I can assure you they will certainly not condone. We pick our friends but we can't pick our relatives."
