The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to have left social networking sites as they concentrate on their new roles in the US.Harry and Meghan, who acquired more than 10 million followers on their official royal Instagram account, were said to have become disillusioned with the "hate" they experienced online.
The Sunday Times confirmed that the couple who gave up as senior royals last year had no intentions to use social networking sites for their non-profit organisation, Archewell, and were unlikely to come back to the sites in a personal capacity.
On Instagram, Harry and Meghan's main social media account was @sussexroyal, which has 10.4 million followers, with no new post shared since March 2020.
As they started a new, more financially independent position in the US, the couple decided never to use the word "royal" in their branding since spring last year.Meghan has already spoken about the "almost unsurvivable" toll of online harassment and said in 2019 that she was the world's most trolled individual.
Appearing last year on the Teenager Therapy podcast in October, she said: "I'm told I was the most trolled person in the world in 2019, male or female. Now, 8 months after I wasn't visible at all, I was on maternity leave, or with a boy.""But what was able to just be manufactured and churned out, it's almost unsurvivable, that's so big, you can't think of what that feels like, because I don't care if you're 15 or 25, if people are saying things about you that aren't true, what that does to your mental and emotional health is so damaging.", she added.
Archewell, which they established last year, has no official digital presence on social media sites. As per its website, its mission is "to unleash the power of compassion to drive systemic cultural change" through non-profit work and "creative activations through the audio and production verticals of business." With plans to create a podcast series and documentaries, the pair have agreed to a multimillion agreement with Spotify and Netflix.
The move away from social networks comes a year after an official statement on the Sussex Royal website said that in their current positions, the pair will continue to use their social platform.
It said: "Yes, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will continue to have a social media platform. They look forward to continuing their use ofsocial mediaand believe that their updated media approach will enable them to share more, with you, directly."
