GHANA STAR THOMAS PARTEY DENIED ENTRY TO CANADA AHEAD OF WORLD CUP OPENER

GHANA STAR THOMAS PARTEY DENIED ENTRY TO CANADA AHEAD OF WORLD CUP OPENER

Ghana midfielder #ThomasPartey will miss his country's opening 2026 World Cup match against Panama in Toronto after being denied entry into Canada.

The 32-year-old, who currently plays for Spanish side Villarreal, was unable to travel from Ghana's training base in Boston after his visa application was refused by Canadian authorities.

FIFA confirmed that the organisation was not involved in the decision, stating that immigration matters remain the responsibility of individual host countries.

A statement from football's governing body said: "FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas.

"The host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country."

The decision comes as Partey awaits trial after pleading not guilty to seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault relating to allegations involving four different women between 2020 and 2022.

Partey has not been convicted of any offence and is due to face trial next year.

Canadian immigration rules state that individuals who have committed or been convicted of certain crimes may be refused entry into the country.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said that while Canada is preparing to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the country's immigration laws remain unchanged.

A spokesperson said: "Canada has been consistent that hosting major events does not change Canada's immigration laws.

"Every person seeking to come to Canada is assessed individually, based on the facts available and the law that applies."

The United States has taken a different approach, with a US Customs and Border Protection official confirming that Partey was admitted into the country after being issued a visa.

The official added that while the US was aware of the pending court case, Partey had not been convicted of a crime.

Partey's absence will be a blow for Ghana, with the experienced midfielder having previously represented the national team at multiple major tournaments and serving as one of the country's most recognisable footballers.
