Three cabin crew members from British Airways were reportedly rushed to hospital after unknowingly consuming marijuana gummies handed to them by a passenger following a long-haul flight.
The incident is said to have taken place after a British Airways flight from Heathrow Airport landed in Los Angeles last week. According to reports, the crew only began eating the sweets after touchdown, while travelling on the crew bus to their hotel.
The gummies reportedly contained up to 300mg of THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana. Shortly after consuming them, several crew members realised something was wrong.
By the time they arrived at their hotel, three members of staff who had eaten multiple gummies were reportedly experiencing severe symptoms, described as “out-of-body experiences”. Sources say the affected crew felt panicked, frightened and out of control, and were subsequently taken to hospital as their condition worsened.
A source told The Sun: “It is a godsend in this case the sweets were not shared until they had arrived in the US. They were consumed in the crew bus after touchdown, and tired staff gratefully gobbled them up. Almost immediately BA staff realised something was wrong.”
Due to the incident, British Airways arranged for a replacement crew to operate the return flight to the UK. The affected crew members were later flown home separately as passengers, several days after the incident.
British Airways has since launched an investigation to identify the passenger who handed out the marijuana edibles. The airline is treating the matter “very seriously”, with sources claiming the individual responsible could face multiple police charges.
In a statement, a British Airways spokesperson said: “A small number of our crew reported feeling unwell at their hotel and have since recovered. We sent a replacement crew to operate the return flight and there was no impact on our customers.”
