BRITAIN’S FIRST GAY SURROGATE PARENTS CHARGED WITH RAPE AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 57, who first made headlines in 1999 as one of Britain’s first gay fathers through surrogacy, appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court alongside his 32-year-old husband, Scott Drewitt-Barlow, both of Danbury in Essex. The pair were charged with multiple serious offences including rape of a man aged 16 or over, sexual assault of a male and modern slavery trafficking for sexual exploitation, with allegations spanning from April 2013 to January 2026 in Essex and Manchester, the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed.

Prosecutors allege repeated instances in which the men were groomed and invited to the defendants’ home or other properties before assaults occurred, something the pair have strongly denied, with defence counsel saying both men deny the claims and intend to contest the charges vigorously.

Police investigations into the allegations involved multiple raids on properties in Essex, including the couple’s home in Danbury and addresses in Braintree and Maldon, and saw forensic teams attend the scenes, authorities said. A dedicated police hotline and incident room have been set up as officers continue to urge anyone with information to come forward as part of the ongoing investigation.

The high-profile nature of the defendants’ public lives has drawn significant media and public interest. Beyond their historic role as early same-sex parents, the couple had gained attention as co-owners of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, a non-league side that secured promotion in the 2025-26 season. Plans for a behind-the-scenes documentary series, Up The Jammers, which was set to air on national television and follow their ambitions to lead the club into higher leagues, were cancelled by broadcasters following the arrests and subsequent charges.

Local residents, fans of the football club and viewers who had anticipated the documentary have expressed shock and bewilderment at the allegations, with some supporters saying they had regarded the couple as benefactors of local sport. Questions have also been raised over how the men’s public profile and business ventures intersected with the unfolding criminal case.

As news of the court proceedings spread online, public reaction has been intense and divided. One person wrote,

“So when he married his daughters ex, they didn’t see that he was a mad man.”

Another commenter said,

“We need to separate this world, We are so sick and tired of the bullsh*t, So many deranged people being allowed subject us all to their madness.”

A third wrote,

“Nothing to do with being gay and everything to do with upper class degeneracy.”

Both defendants have entered not guilty pleas to all charges and remain remanded in custody ahead of the scheduled Crown Court hearing, with legal teams preparing for what is expected to be a lengthy and closely watched trial.
