BRITAIN REACTS TO DONALD TRUMP WINNING THE PRESDENTIAL ELECTION

Over night Americans made their choice on who would be the next leader of the United States. While many Brits stayed up all night to watch the results as it unfolded, some woke to see the news that Donald Trump had beaten Kamala Harris to become President-elect. This makes the Republican the first former president to return to power since Grover Cleveland in 1892, the first person convicted of a felony to be elected and, at 78, the oldest person elected to the office.

So of course, our Residents had plenty to say about it. One comment on our Instagram page read: "It’s truly a sad day for the USA." While another added: "Letting a TV host run your country is actually insane. next central cee gonna wanna become prime minister." While a third added: "This definitely history being made…not for the good though."

But as much as there was fury at Trump's re-election, there was also a lot of support. One Resident wrote: "I am actually happy he won. I honestly wasn't buying what Kamala was selling." A second added: "I hate identity politics this isn’t about Kamala’s skin or gender, truth is she supported everything that destroys the black community. Trump was the only president who didn’t start a war. He in fact created peace with North Korea." While a third wrote: "You can tell most people in the comments watch and believe the news far too much. He was actually a good president, the best the USA has had in decades. Stats show that."

Meanwhile, the new Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch demanded that Prime Minister Keir Starmer apologise to Donald Trump for previous comments made by him and other Labour figures today. Badenoch slammed Sir Keir, Foreign Secretary David Lammy and other senior figures in the Labour party in her debut at Prime Minster's questions. She insisted that Sir Keir must invite Trump to visit the UK and address the Houses of Parliament. Last year, Sir Keir compared the Conservative Party with Trump as he accused the Tories of falling far from Churchillian values. He said in a speech: "These aren't Churchill's Tories any more. If anything they behave more and more like Donald Trump. They look at the politics of America and they want to bring that here." In 2017, Mr Lammy called Mr Trump a "racist and KKK/neo-Nazi sympathiser."
