Boris Johnson has stepped down as Prime Minister but will remain as PM until autumn.
Following a staggering number of resignations from his cabinet members, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has followed suit and has resigned as PM and leader of the Conservative Party.
This comes after this week's struggle as senior members of parliament stepped down due to a lack of confidence in the PM, including Health Secretary Sajid Javid and Chancellor Rishi Sunak.
In his letter of resignation, Mr Sunak said the "public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously".
"I recognise this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning,"
Mr Javid added he could "no longer continue in good conscience" under the prime minister, who had lost his confidence.
It is assumed that their resignations set off a domino effect of resignations with over 50 resignations in the party with even the most loyal members to Johnson including Priti Patel and newly appointed Chancellor, Nadhim Zahawi, calling for the PM to step down.
Zahawi was said to have been "heartbroken" and added "Prime Minister: this is not sustainable and it will only get worse: for you, for the Conservative party and most importantly of all the country. You must do the right thing and go now,".
It is said the seemingly new lack of confidence stemmed from the appointment of Ex-Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher, who has been accused of sexual misconduct, accusations of which Johnson was allegedly aware of and did not acknowledge.
Johnson's departure follows almost three years of scandals, including anger over his handling of harassment allegations against Pincher, the Deputy Chief Whip; a police fine over lockdown parties, Partygate, in Downing Street; attempts to change the standards system; and accusations of breaking international law, the cost of living crisis and much more.
The Prime Minister announced in his speech that it has been "the best job in the world" and commended his fellow MPs and staff for their hard work and will support the new PM in their role which shall be appointed in the autumn.
Johnson also outlined the Conservative Party's successes including having the fastest vaccine roll-out, their success with Brexit and their leadership in support of the Ukrainian war.
