A man has been taken into custody on suspicion of assault following an incident in which several people were reportedly sprayed with a substance resembling pepper spray inside a multistorey car park at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 3, according to police. The Metropolitan Police said armed officers were dispatched at around 8:11am after receiving reports that individuals had been attacked. According to an initial statement, a group of men allegedly used what appeared to be a type of pepper spray on members of the public before fleeing the area.
One suspect was arrested at the scene, while officers continued efforts to identify and locate additional individuals believed to be involved.
Commander Peter Stevens said the early investigation suggested the confrontation stemmed from a dispute between people who were acquainted with one another, which escalated and left several individuals injured. “Our officers responded swiftly, and there will be an enhanced police presence at Heathrow throughout the morning to support the investigation and reassure those in the vicinity,” he added.
He confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terrorism. “We recognise the concern this may cause and appreciate the cooperation of everyone affected this morning.”
Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service assessed multiple casualties, who were then taken to hospital. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing, officials said. “We have a number of teams on site and are treating several patients,” a spokesperson noted.
The London Fire Brigade provided specialist support during the response but was stood down shortly after 10:30am.
Videos circulating on social media showed a man being handcuffed while ambulances, fire crews, and armed police were present at the scene.
A Heathrow Airport representative said airport teams were assisting emergency services and advised passengers to allow extra travel time, adding that anyone with concerns should contact their airline directly.
Although Terminal 3 remained operational, the incident caused delays for road users and some disruption to public transport services around the airport.
