Residents, the BAFTA TV Award nominations are in, from Top Boy to Dreaming Whilst Black, here are some of your faves who are up for the most prestigious British TV award.
Although The Crown and Black Mirror took the lead with 8 and 7 nominations, respectively; the much loved British tv show Top Boy also secured an impressive 3 nominations. They include nominations for the Best Drama series, Best Leading Male Actor, Kane Robinson and Best Supporting Actress, Jasmine Jobson. Jobson took to social media to thank the BAFTAs for her third consecutive nomination in the last three years, despite never winning the prestigious award, we hope this year is her year!
17 out of the 44 performers nominated this year have received their first ever nomination by the Bafta Television awards. Including Nico Parker, the 19-year-old daughter of award-winning actress Thandiwe Newton and English Director Ol Parker, who earned herself her first nomination for her critically acclaimed role in The Last of Us. Kane Robinson, commonly known by his stage name Kano, also received his first ever individual nomination for Top Boy, along with Hammed Animashaun who received his first nomination in the category of best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme for his role in Black Ops.
The multi-talented Writer, Performer and Executive Producer of the hit show Dreaming whilst Black Adjani Salmon, also secured several well-deserved nominations. The show which began as a 2018 web series, has quickly become one of our community’s favourite shows which Salmon himself described as his only objective when he wrote it. Of the beloved 6-part series Salmon has said: “We made it for our community. As much as I’m grateful that the critics and press loved it, I have to remind myself that we didn’t make it for them. If we get celebrated, thank you, we really appreciate it, but if we don’t, that’s fine because when I was writing it I was thinking ‘I hope my cousins like this. Big Zuu has also bagged yet another nomination in the category of best Entertainment performance for his one of a kind show Big Zuu’s Big Eats.
The P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award nominees were also unveiled recently and included a nomination for Doctor Who’s reveal of Rwandan-Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor; Gwatwa is the first black and openly queer man to be cast in the iconic role.
Of the nominations, Sara Putt, Chair of BAFTA, said: I’m delighted to see so many first-time nominees, so much new and emerging talent and so many debut projects recognised today… The exceptional variety and quality of programmes nominated reflects the creative powerhouse that is the UK television industry.
The Bafta Television awards recognise exceptional performances, craftsmanship and stories broadcast from January 1st to December 31st 2023 and will take place on Sunday 28th April and will broadcast on Sunday 12th May on both BBC One and iPlayer.
