Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood has been charged with sexual offences against two more women, with the latest allegations dating back more than two decades.

The 68-year-old has now been charged with a total of 17 offences involving nine women, relating to alleged incidents between 1983 and 2016.

According to the Metropolitan Police, Westwood is accused of indecently assaulting a teenage girl who was aged either 16 or 17 in 1991. He has also been charged with sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman in May 2004.

Both of the latest alleged offences are said to have taken place in London. Westwood is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in relation to the two new charges, although a date for the hearing has not yet been set.

The latest development comes as Westwood is already preparing to face trial at Southwark Crown Court over a separate set of allegations involving seven women.

He previously pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault. The trial is currently expected to take place in January. The charges he previously faced relate to alleged non-recent offences spanning several decades, with the allegations dating from the 1980s through to the 2010s. Westwood was initially charged in October last year with offences involving seven women. Those allegations include three alleged indecent assaults at the BBC during the 1990s.

He is also accused of four indecent assaults alleged to have taken place in London during the 1980s.

Further allegations include an accusation that he raped a woman at a hotel in 1996, while another woman has accused him of sexual assault at a nightclub in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 2010.

Westwood is additionally accused of two indecent assaults and one count of rape relating to alleged incidents at a London address in the early 2000s. There are also two allegations of rape said to have taken place at a London address during the 2010s.

The Crown Prosecution Service has now authorised the two latest charges following a Metropolitan Police investigation into separate reports involving two additional women.

Catherine P Baccas, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor, said:

"Today the Crown Prosecution Service has authorised two further charges of sexual assault and indecent assault against Tim Westwood.

"Mr Westwood is already charged with nine counts of indecent assault, two counts of sexual assault and four counts of rape in relation to reported non recent offences between 1983 and 2016 involving seven women.

"These new charges, following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police, relate to separate reports of non-recent offences in 1991 and 2004 involving two additional women."

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, from the Metropolitan Police Service, also addressed the position of the women who have reported allegations to police. He said:

"The women who have made reports have placed their trust in us, and we remain committed to providing them with all available support."

The latest charges come as Westwood's existing case continues through the courts, with the allegations against him relating to a lengthy period during his career in broadcasting.

Westwood began his career in local radio before joining Capital Radio in the late 1980s. He later moved to the BBC in 1994, where he became a prominent figure on Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra.

He remained with the BBC for almost two decades, becoming particularly associated with the station's coverage of hip-hop, R&B and urban music.

After leaving the BBC in 2013, Westwood joined Capital Xtra, where he presented a regular Saturday programme and was known on air as "The Big Dawg".

He remained with the station until leaving the company in 2022.

The allegations currently before the courts concern reported incidents from different periods of Westwood's career, including allegations dating back to before he joined the BBC.

The two new charges are separate from the 15 offences for which he was previously charged and relate to two additional women, according to the CPS. As with the existing allegations, the latest accusations have not been tested in court and Westwood is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

He is expected to attend Westminster Magistrates' Court at a date yet to be confirmed over the latest charges, while his existing case is due to proceed to trial at Southwark Crown Court in January.

The Metropolitan Police and CPS have not indicated that the latest charges alter the current timetable for the existing proceedings.
