A teenage boy has tragically died and his close friend remains in a critical condition after a suspected e-bike explosion sparked a devastating fire at a flat in south London. Sixteen-year-old Tommy Ballay-Dean, described as a talented and much-loved young footballer, lost his life after a blaze broke out at a home on Coopers Road in Southwark on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene, but despite their efforts, Tommy—affectionately known as “Junior” to family and friends—was pronounced dead at the scene. His friend, Shauny Halsey, also 16, sustained severe burns and was rushed to hospital in a life-threatening condition. He was later placed in an induced coma and transferred to a specialist facility in Essex, where he is expected to undergo multiple operations, including skin graft procedures, as part of a long and difficult recovery.

Those who knew Tommy have spoken of their heartbreak and paid tribute to a boy remembered for his warmth, faith, and passion for football. His coach and family friend, Dean Stanhope, described him as someone who “lit up every room,” adding that Tommy was deeply spiritual and regularly prayed. He said the teenager was dedicated to his football ambitions and had been working tirelessly to pursue a future in the sport.

Tommy attended St Thomas the Apostle School in Peckham and had played for several local teams, earning recognition for both his ability and commitment. According to his coach, he had recently reached a point in his development where he was ready to take the next step in his football journey.

In the days following the tragedy, the local community has rallied around Tommy’s grieving family. Hundreds of people have visited his home and church to pay their respects, light candles, and offer prayers. Friends and neighbours have described an outpouring of support, with many coming together to comfort his parents during what has been described as an unimaginable loss.

Meanwhile, Shauny’s family is also facing immense hardship. The fire completely destroyed their home and all of their possessions, leaving them displaced. His parents and younger sister are currently staying in temporary accommodation near the hospital so they can remain close to him.

A relative described the aftermath of the fire as catastrophic, saying the flat has been reduced to a shell, with even metal fixtures melted by the intensity of the heat. The family has not yet returned to the property due to the extent of the damage and emotional toll.

Friends of the boys have also been deeply affected, with many gathering in grief and shock. According to relatives, the teenagers were part of a close-knit group who spent their time playing football and video games, staying out of trouble and focused on their futures.

It is understood that the fire broke out shortly after the boys returned home from nearby shops. Shauny’s mother had briefly stepped out to collect his younger sister from school at the time.

Firefighters from the London Fire Brigade responded quickly, with four engines and around 25 personnel attending the scene. The fire was eventually brought under control later that afternoon.

Investigations into the cause of the blaze are ongoing, with early reports suggesting a faulty e-bike or charger may have triggered the incident. Authorities have indicated that the fire is not currently being treated as suspicious, though inquiries continue.

In response to the tragedy, fundraising efforts have been launched to support both families. One campaign, organised to help cover Tommy’s funeral costs and assist his loved ones, has already raised significant donations from the community. A separate fundraiser has also been set up to help Shauny’s family rebuild their lives after losing everything in the fire.
