TEACHER SPARKS DEBATE AFTER CLAIMS ABOUT LOWER EXPECTATIONS FOR BLACK BOYS IN SCHOOLS

Residents, this one has split opinion straight down the middle 😬📚

A teacher has sparked debate online after sharing what he learned at a seminar focused on teaching Black boys in schools, claiming educators were encouraged to lower expectations due to the barriers some students may face.

According to the teacher, the guidance suggested that contextual challenges should be taken into account when assessing performance and behaviour. However he argued that understanding those challenges should not translate into lowering academic standards.

Residents have been weighing in heavily online with strong opinions on both sides of the argument. One user, @lordfokwa, said “No wonder research shows that black kids turn to perform better in general when black teachers teach them!” while @auntyshylo added “Smh what a shame. But also, west African girls & women specifically, I’m holding space for us. We do so well and don’t get given our credit enough. Proud of us, keeping studying and working hard.”

Others questioned the framing entirely, with @gvcampb3ll writing “I’m almost 100% sure he is misquoting her. I find it hard to believe a black woman would be teaching a seminar about having ‘lower expectations’ for black boys in education. Would like to hear him expand on what was said.”

Meanwhile, some residents shifted the conversation to their own school experiences, with @djpeekay recalling “Teacher used to walk in the class and kick me straight out… without anything even happening loool apparently it was a preventative measure 😂😂”

So the question is simple, should expectations ever be adjusted based on a student’s background, or does that risk setting the bar too low or too high?
