Few new artists have shaken up the UK rap scene quite like Ceechynaa. Known for her unapologetic lyrics, razor sharp confidence and uncompromising drill sound, the South London rapper has built a loyal fanbase by telling her story without holding anything back. Now, she may have turned from her saucy lyrics to Christianity after posting a Godly verse.

Born Chelsea Ode on 29 December 2003 to Nigerian parents, Ceechynaa grew up in South London before later living in Essex. She has spoken openly about the challenges she faced growing up and has never shied away from discussing difficult chapters of her life, including working as a sex worker before deciding to pursue music full time. Her honesty has become one of the defining characteristics of her artistry and has helped her stand out in an increasingly competitive UK rap scene. Listeners have called her the UK’s Sexyy Red and compared her to hyper sexualised rappers such as Nicki Minaj and Foxy Brown.

She officially entered the music scene with the independently released single Legal Baby in 2022. The raw drill track quickly generated buzz online and showcased her direct, conversational style. She followed it with Last Laugh in 2023, continuing to build momentum and attracting praise from artists including Chloe Bailey and Lily Allen.

Her breakthrough arrived in late 2024 with Peggy. The infectious drill anthem quickly exploded across TikTok and streaming platforms, becoming her biggest release to date. The song reached the UK Singles Chart and also appeared on Billboard’s TikTok Top 50, helping introduce Ceechynaa to a global audience. With tens of millions of streams and countless user generated videos, including one from Cardi B, Peggy cemented her status as one of the UK’s fastest rising rap stars.

Nowadays, she has been singing a slightly different tune than lyrics such as “I’m in the back of the car with your daddy And he’s twerkin’ and poppin’ a Perc” would have predicted. She recently posted a Bible scripture to her social media. Whilst Ceechynaa has previously mentioned she grew up in the church, her music led listeners to believe it was a life she had long since left behind, until her recent post, which included a scriptural themed quote that appeared to be a reworking of Psalm 131:

“She sat still, quieted her soul, listened to the Lord, and he spoke peace over her spirit.”

Surprisingly, some of her fans did not respond to the alleged conversion positively, with one user commenting, “say it ain’t so” and another saying, “I’m genuinely so upset I wanna cry bro”. The controversial reaction to her potentially choosing a new path was equally met with support and praise from fellow worshippers and others, with one user stating:

“Seeing people get mad over ceechyna becoming a Christian when they never gave the same energy when she OD’D and was hospitalized … but God forbid a woman does something that helps her change for the better”

Ceechynaa has already demonstrated that she is more than a viral artist. With Peggy establishing her as a major force in UK drill, many believe she is only at the beginning of what could become one of British rap’s most compelling careers.
