POLICE IN RIOT GEAR DESCEND ON EDGWARE ROAD AFTER FRANCE BEAT MOROCCO IN WORLD CUP

What began as celebrations following Morocco's World Cup quarter-final quickly escalated into scenes of disorder on one of London's busiest streets, prompting a large-scale police response.

Hundreds of people gathered on Edgware Road after France secured a 2-0 victory over Morocco, ending the North African nation's hopes of reaching the World Cup semi-finals. While many supporters simply celebrated and chanted in the streets, the atmosphere later deteriorated as police moved in to disperse growing crowds.

France beat Morocco 2-0 at 2026 World Cup match

Videos widely shared across social media showed officers in riot gear forming lines along Edgware Road as fireworks were launched into the air and bottles were reportedly thrown towards police. Other clips appeared to show crowds running through the streets as emergency vehicles arrived at the scene. Traffic in the area was brought to a standstill, with buses and other vehicles unable to pass as thousands gathered on the road.

According to reports, one police officer suffered a head injury during the disorder and was taken to hospital. Four people were arrested in connection with the incident as officers worked to restore order. Investigations remain ongoing.

France's victory itself was another significant step in their World Cup campaign. Goals from Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise secured a 2-0 win, sending Didier Deschamps' side into the semi-finals while bringing Morocco's impressive tournament run to an end. Morocco had once again captured the imagination of football fans around the world after progressing to the last eight, continuing the nation's rise following its historic run to the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup.

Edgware Road has long become a gathering point for London's Arab and North African communities during major international football tournaments. The area has regularly hosted large celebrations following victories involving countries such as Morocco and Egypt, with supporters often waving flags, sounding car horns and filling the streets long after the final whistle. While the overwhelming majority of those gatherings pass without major incident, large crowds have occasionally required a police response to keep traffic moving and maintain public safety.

The Metropolitan Police have not suggested that everyone present was involved in the disorder. Videos from the evening showed many supporters simply celebrating the occasion, while smaller groups appeared to become involved in clashes with officers as tensions increased. Police enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.

The scenes quickly became a major talking point online, where people shared mixed reactions to the footage.

One person commented:

"I don't understand this??? So what has you losing to France got to do with the UK?"

Another wrote:

"Yeah, break and destroy things in London, where you live, because your home country lost a football match to France in America. Be for real. Did they actually think they were going to beat France…?"

A third added:

"Oh go away you sore losers. No class. All the other African countries in the World Cup went out gracefully except Egypt and Morocco."

Others pointed out that the actions seen in some of the videos should not be taken as representative of every supporter who had gathered to watch or celebrate the match, with many football fans attending simply to enjoy the occasion peacefully.

The disorder has once again highlighted how major international sporting events can generate huge celebrations across London's diverse communities, but also how quickly isolated incidents can overshadow what is, for most supporters, a chance to come together over football. As enquiries continue, the focus will now turn to identifying those responsible for any criminal behaviour captured during the evening.
