Netflix has confirmed the rumours and says that it will definitely start putting adverts on its platform.
After the news was widely reported of the company's rough year following the loss of subscribers and as a result a decrease in share prices, Netflix has confirmed that they are turning to advertisements for help.Advertisements will be used to help fund a lower-priced subscription tier to help bring people back to the platform who can no longer afford the prices.Netflix's co-chief executive, Ted Sarandos confirmed in an interview that the new plan will be implemented soon. He said:"We've left a big customer segment off the table, which is people who say: "Hey, Netflix is too expensive for me and I don't mind advertising.'"
"We're adding an ad tier for folks who say, "Hey, I want a lower price and I'll watch ads.'
"Sarandos made clear that the implementation of ads on the service will not impact those who have not subscribed to this lower-priced tier and regular subscribers will not see ads when watching their favourite shows. The company announced last week that a further 300 people were made redundant equating to 4% of their overall staff. This is the second round of job cuts that have been made by the company.
A Netflix spokesperson said on Thursday:"Today we sadly let go of around 300 employees. While we continue to invest significantly in the business, we made these adjustments so that our costs are growing in line with our slower revenue growth."
"We are so grateful for everything they have done for Netflix and are working hard to support them through this difficult transition."
Netflix employees across the world have been subject to redundancy as employees in Singapore, Tokyo, Mumbai, Seoul and Argentina have been impacted alongside employees in Europe and of course the US who have been affected the most.
