Ed Sheeran has found himself at the center of a growing controversy after every remaining support act on his Loop Tour withdrew in protest following the removal of rapper Macklemore from the lineup. The situation escalated rapidly after Macklemore was dropped from the tour following pro-Palestinian comments he made during a performance. Sheeran later stated that the decision was made by promoters and venues rather than by him personally.
Adding to the backlash, children's entertainer Ms. Rachel publicly criticized Sheeran's response. In a social media post, she argued that the singer "had an opportunity" to stand against pressure and claimed that "silence during a genocide is not neutral."
The artists who announced their withdrawal from the tour were:
Multiple reports confirmed that all four acts pulled out in solidarity with Macklemore after his removal from the tour.
Finneas was among the first to announce his departure, writing:
"Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed."
He added:
"I stand with Palestine and its people."
Aaron Rowe described the decision as difficult because of his friendship with Sheeran, but said:
"As Irish people we know all too well about genocide, forced famine and violent occupation."
He also said he could not:
"stand by and allow billionaires to use their position of power to silence" voices speaking out.
Lukas Graham thanked Sheeran while explaining the band's decision to leave the tour, stating:
"Money doesn't give you the right to own the conversation."
The group added that financial influence should not determine "who gets to speak."
Beoga, who had been serving as Sheeran's touring band, pointed to Ireland's history and said:
"We are Irish people who understand colonialism."
The band said it would continue its activism for justice and Palestine.
Ms. Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Accurso, joined the debate by criticizing Sheeran's handling of the controversy.
According to reports, she wrote:
"Ed Sheeran had an opportunity [to] show that we won't be bullied into punishing people for supporting Palestine."
She also argued:
"Silence during a genocide is not neutral."
A later report said Ms. Rachel further questioned why Sheeran had previously participated in events supporting Ukraine while choosing not to publicly discuss Gaza during his concerts.
Sheeran has maintained that Macklemore's removal was not his decision. In a public statement, he said:
"Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter's decision, it was not mine."
The singer explained that some venues had indicated they would cancel shows if Macklemore remained on the bill. Sheeran also said he had spent time attempting to find a compromise between the various parties involved.
He added that while he respects Macklemore's beliefs, he prefers to use his platform as a place of "safety and sanctuary" and believes there can be different approaches toward pursuing peace.
With Finneas, Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham and Beoga all withdrawing, the remaining dates of Sheeran's tour face significant uncertainty. The controversy has sparked wider debate across the music industry about artistic expression, political activism and the role performers should play in addressing international conflicts.
