East London singer kwn has made history after Good Girl was crowned the first ever Number 1 on the newly launched Official R&B UK Chart.

The achievement makes kwn the first artist to top the specialist chart, which has been created to showcase the biggest current R&B releases from British artists.

Good Girl claimed the top spot on the inaugural chart, while kwn also secured another impressive position in the Top Three, with Risk It All landing at Number 3. Her double appearance puts her at the centre of the first ever edition of a chart designed specifically to celebrate the UK's growing R&B scene.

The new Official R&B UK Chart has been launched by the Official Charts Company in collaboration with Everything R&B. It is a weekly Top 20 chart covering contemporary and alternative R&B, neo-soul, R&B-pop, soul-infused rap and the genre's evolving underground.

Unlike the main Official Singles Chart, the specialist chart focuses on British R&B releases from the previous 12 months. Its rankings are calculated using combined UK sales and streaming data, giving emerging and established homegrown artists another platform to measure their success.

The significance of kwn's achievement comes at a time when British R&B continues to develop a stronger identity and audience both in the UK and internationally. The new chart gives the genre its own dedicated weekly benchmark, allowing artists making R&B in Britain to be recognised specifically within their field.

For kwn, the milestone is another chapter in a career that has developed considerably over the past few years.

Born and raised in Walthamstow, East London, kwn, pronounced "kay-one", developed a love for R&B from a young age. Her family regularly played artists including Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Usher and other influential R&B acts, helping shape the sound that would eventually become central to her own music.

She began making music as a teenager and later attended East London Arts and Music, where she developed her songwriting, production and performance skills. Her early career was not, however, a straightforward journey towards becoming a full-time recording artist.

Before her breakthrough, kwn worked a number of jobs while continuing to pursue music. She has worked at Sainsbury's, as a chef alongside her father and, following a particularly difficult period in her career, as an Amazon delivery driver.

In 2024, kwn had been dropped by her previous record label and found herself struggling financially. She eventually decided to take a more independent approach with Worst Behaviour, attempting to sell the track directly to fans.

The gamble paid off. What began as an effort to generate enough money to keep her music career moving quickly developed into something much bigger, with the song attracting significant attention and eventually leading to a remix featuring US R&B star Kehlani.

The remix helped propel kwn further into the spotlight, with its music video going viral and introducing her to an even wider international audience. Her growing profile was followed by the release of her EP With All Due Respect, which further established her as one of the UK's emerging R&B voices.

Her rise has continued throughout 2026, with the singer releasing more music and performing to increasingly large audiences around the world. She has also spoken about the importance of making music that genuinely connects with people rather than simply chasing numbers online. Her journey from working delivery jobs to becoming a chart-topping R&B artist has therefore made the latest achievement even more significant.

The launch of the Official R&B UK Chart also comes as the British music industry continues to make space for artists who are pushing the genre in different directions. For kwn, Good Girl now holds a place in that history as the song that opened the new chart at Number 1.

The first chart was revealed by DJ Ace on KISS XTRA, bringing the result directly to the R&B audience the new ranking has been created to represent. The Official R&B UK Chart will now be updated weekly, giving British R&B artists another opportunity to have their work formally recognised.

The achievement comes after kwn had already established herself as a rising name through songs including Worst Behaviour, Do What I Say and Risk It All. Her music has also earned attention from audiences outside Britain, particularly in the US, where her take on modern R&B has continued to build momentum.

Speaking about what draws her towards the genre, kwn previously explained that R&B's emotional depth is a major part of its appeal.

"R&B as a genre has the most amount of feeling in it and the most amount of passion put into it," she said. "Everything's so intentional."

That sense of intention has now helped place her at the beginning of a new chapter for British R&B, with her name permanently attached to the first Number 1 in the history of the Official R&B UK Chart.

Rather than simply being another chart position, Good Girl's achievement gives kwn a piece of UK music history at a point when her career is continuing to grow.

With the new chart now set to return every Friday, kwn will also have the distinction of being the artist who started it all, becoming the first name to sit at the top of a new weekly celebration of Britain's R&B talent.
