South African star Tyla has finally addressed the viral Met Gala interaction between herself and Rihanna, after internet sleuths instigated what many believed was an awkward exchange between the two stars.
The moment quickly became one of the most talked-about clips from fashion’s biggest night, with online users speculating that Rihanna may have brushed past Tyla or paid her dust during a brief backstage interaction. As the footage spread across TikTok and X, the internet began building its own narratives around the exchange, with some viewers claiming Tyla looked visibly uncomfortable while others insisted Rihanna simply seemed distracted and exhausted after the event.
Now, Tyla has shared her side of the story in a video online, shutting down any rumours of tension. Explaining the moment from her perspective, the “Water” hitmaker made it clear there’s no bad blood and reiterated that she’s a huge Rihanna fan.
Tyla said in a now viral social media post: “I met her, but I think she was occupied. I went up to her and was like, ‘Oh hey, you know,’ and she was like, ‘Hey, umm… my baby daddy’s calling me,’ and then she left.” Tyla laughingly added, “I was like, oop.”

The discourse surrounding the moment became even bigger because of the comparisons often made between the two artists. Since breaking onto the global scene, Tyla has frequently been described by fans online as having a similar cool-girl aura to Rihanna, from her fashion choices to her effortless blend of pop, R&B and Afrobeats influences.
Over the last two years, Tyla has gone from rising talent to one of music’s fastest-growing stars. Her breakout single Water became a global smash, dominating TikTok, charts and clubs worldwide while earning her a Grammy win for Best African Music Performance. Since then, she’s continued building momentum with tracks like "Truth or Dare" and "Jump", while also becoming a major face in fashion and luxury culture.
The Met Gala itself remains one of the most prestigious nights in fashion and celebrity culture. Held annually at Metropolitan Museum of Art in support of the Costume Institute, the event brings together the world’s biggest actors, musicians, athletes, designers and internet personalities for an invite-only evening centred around high fashion and cultural influence. In recent years, simply attending the Gala has become a status symbol in itself.
Online reactions to Tyla’s explanation have been split. Some people feel the criticism aimed at her is unnecessary, arguing that she simply clarified an interaction the internet had already turned into a viral talking point. Others believe the situation was harmless to begin with and think it’s one of those celebrity moments that probably didn’t need a public explanation at all.

Still, if there’s one thing social media has proven once again, it’s that a five-second celebrity interaction can somehow become a full-blown cultural debate overnight.
