TRAGEDY STRIKES LIVERPOOL FC VICTORY PARADE AS CAR PLOUGHS INTO CELEBRATING CROWD

The city of Liverpool was in high spirits as an estimated one million fans lined the streets to celebrate Liverpool FC's 2024–25 Premier League title. The open-top bus parade had just passed through Water Street when, shortly after 6:00 pm, a grey Ford Galaxy entered the pedestrian-filled area. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver appeared to argue with pedestrians before accelerating into the crowd.

The vehicle struck numerous individuals, causing widespread panic. Some bystanders attempted to stop the car by smashing its windows, but the driver continued before coming to a halt. Emergency services, including police and paramedics, responded swiftly to the scene. Four individuals were trapped beneath the vehicle and had to be rescued by firefighters. A nearby restaurant, Riva, was used as a temporary triage centre for the injured.

According to the North West Ambulance Service, 47 people were injured in the incident, with 27 requiring hospitalisation. Among those hospitalised were four children, and two individuals, including a child, sustained serious injuries. An additional 20 people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. A cycling paramedic was also struck by the vehicle but escaped injury.

Merseyside Police arrested a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area at the scene. The incident is currently being treated as isolated and not related to terrorism. Investigators are examining how the vehicle accessed the restricted area, with some reports suggesting it may have tailgated an ambulance to enter the closed-off street.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and beyond. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the event as "appalling" and praised the emergency services for their swift response. Liverpool FC issued a statement expressing their thoughts and prayers for those affected and offered support to emergency services. Mayor Steve Rotheram acknowledged the difficulty of the day but emphasized the city's unity in the face of tragedy.
