Michael has made cinema history after becoming the first biographical film ever to generate more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The blockbuster, which chronicles the life and career of Michael Jackson, stars the late music icon’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in the lead role. The film follows Jackson’s journey from his early years with the Jackson 5 through to the height of his global fame, culminating with the legendary Bad World Tour in the late 1980s.

Since its release, Michael has shattered a number of industry records. The film opened to the biggest debut weekend ever achieved by a biopic before going on to become the highest-grossing film in the genre, overtaking previous record-holder Oppenheimer.

It has now been confirmed that the production has earned more than $1.001 billion worldwide, cementing its place in movie history as the first biographical feature to cross the billion-dollar mark.

Director Antoine Fuqua described the achievement as a significant moment for everyone involved in bringing the story to the big screen.

“Reaching this extraordinary $1 billion milestone with Michael is a deeply humbling moment that celebrates the tireless dedication of our incredible producers, cast, crew, and partners,” Fuqua said.

He added that the success reflected the collective effort of those who shared a vision of honouring one of music’s most influential performers.

“I am profoundly grateful to audiences around the world who embraced this film, supported it in theatres, and connected with this story across generations and cultures,” he continued.

Fuqua also praised the power of cinema to unite people, describing the achievement as a historic chapter he would never forget.

The film concludes with a recreation of a concert at Wembley Stadium before displaying the message: “His Story Continues” — a clear indication that the story is far from over.

A sequel has already been confirmed and is expected to explore a different period of Jackson’s life. Reports suggest the follow-up may not continue directly from where the first film ends and could instead focus on some of the most controversial chapters surrounding the singer’s legacy.

Among the topics expected to be addressed are the child sexual abuse allegations made against Jackson. Elements relating to those claims were reportedly included in the original screenplay for Michael before undergoing revisions during production.

According to reports, reshoots were ordered after filmmakers became aware of a legal agreement that prevented the Jackson estate from referencing one of Jackson’s accusers, Jordan Chandler.

The issue remains a subject of public debate. Last month, it was also reported that James Safechuck and Wade Robson — who both accused Jackson of abuse in the 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland — were granted a new trial date scheduled for 2028.

With Michael continuing to attract audiences around the world and a sequel already in development, the film’s record-breaking success suggests interest in Jackson’s life and legacy remains as strong as ever.
