Anthony Joshua’s driver has been charged in connection with a tragic road crash in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of two key members of the former heavyweight champion’s team, police have confirmed. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared before the Sagamu Magistrates’ Court on Friday, where prosecutors brought multiple charges against him. According to police sources, these include causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s licence. The case has been adjourned until 20 January. The incident occurred on Monday on the busy Lagos–Ibadan expressway in Ogun State, near Lagos. Joshua was travelling as a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on the highway. Two of his close associates, personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami, were pronounced dead at the scene. Joshua, 36, sustained injuries in the crash and was taken to hospital, where he received treatment before being discharged on Wednesday. Images shared following the incident showed the boxer being helped from the wreckage by emergency responders. In a joint statement, officials from Ogun and Lagos states said Joshua was “heavy hearted” following the loss of the two men, both of whom were described as close friends as well as long-standing members of his professional team. After leaving hospital, Joshua visited the funeral home where the bodies of Ayodele and Ghami were being prepared for repatriation. Tributes have poured in from across the boxing world. Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter for more than a decade, shared an emotional message on social media. “Rest in peace Latz and Sina,” Hearn wrote. “Your energy and loyalty among so many other great qualities will be deeply missed. Praying for strength and guidance for all their family, friends and of course AJ during this very difficult time.” The tragedy has cast a shadow over Joshua’s career and personal life, as investigations into the circumstances of the crash continue through the Nigerian courts.
